History Education through Augmented Reality

The Civil War Augmented Reality Project is a great demonstration of what is capable when this technology is put in the hands of educators.  This team has taken what would normally be an uneventful field trip to a national park and made it leave for the visitors.  What would normally be a tour of empty battlefield once filled with action are now active scenes filled with activities that engage the students in play and transport them back in time almost.  Student in an environment are engaged physicall, emotionally and mentally.

The ability to achieve something like this is well within the grasp of this project team with the purchase of the needed equipment and money.  This concept could be widely applied to museums and similar parks.

  1. My husband teaches 8th grade history and is just realizing how much his students enjoy activities and good videos better than worksheets and lectures. I'll let him view your blog entry and see if he can apply it to his new lesson plans.

  2. Guess I should say they don't just enjoy the lessons better but they are more engaged in the learning and getting more out of it, too.

  3. Thanks so much for visiting my blog. It's just so hard to engage students with worksheets and such today when they have access to so much more. As an example my son has been playing a game I'm not sure I should have bought him for his playstation that depicts war and is pretty violent. He's been so curious about wars, history and why wars start and how they are fought. He's on his sixth book since we purchased this game for his birthday at the end of September. I will blog later about this school that is using gaming and game designers to implement their curriculum.
